Silver Culture Story:
Silver plays a significant role in every Miao people’s life. Everyone wears silver jewelry, especially Miao women. A woman in the Miao tribe can carry over 10 + kg of silver jewelry every day. The Miao tribe does not locate at a place where silver is abundant. However, how did silver become an important part of their lives? The Miao tribe experienced many major migrations, and they rarely settled at any specific location throughout its history. Therefore, the Miao people had to carry their wealth around, so they turned their wealth (silver money) into jewelry they could wear.
Children:
On the day the baby is born, his or her grandparents will prepare a set of unique hand-crafted silver jewelries for the babies. The set includes a silver bracelet, silver necklace, and a necklace with a decorated lock to bless the baby’s health, happiness, fortune, growth and longevity. On these baby silver jewelries, the common crafting patterns are lions, fish and butterflies. The animals represent power, fertility and kinship. Miao people give Children silver bracelets, baby necklaces, and special foot chains to bless the children.
